Democracy in action is very exciting. Many have pooh poohed California s recall election by calling it undemocratic. It is, however, exactly what democracy s all about.
I can t remember the last time I saw a federal circuit court argument on television. I would safely guess that it s never happened in my lifetime. I can t remember when there were more than one hundred candidates for any one office on the ballot. I would bet a lot of money that it hasn t happened in any recent election that s come to pass.
Again, I watched those Sunday morning talk shows with tons of white male liberals wringing their hands about the future of democracy in California. Bill Clinton, Al Gore, John Kerry, John Edwards and others have spend time in California recently touting the end of democracy as we know it.
I have never seen so much democracy in my life and I like it. Voters are energized over a half million of us have already voted. People are debating the issues and the candidates at parties, at get togethers at the supermarket.
Lots of east coasters have tried to convince me that they are laughing at us around the country. I ve a bit of news. Many have been laughing at California for a long time. Our cars are to fancy, our food is to healthy, our plastic surgery is over the top we exercise too much, we re too shallow, etcetera, etcetera yet California is the most populous state in our nation.
We re on our own little world here enjoying democracy an that s just fine. Trust me, we re not writing our hands over New York or Massachusetts politics. No one I ve talked to is worried about Texas actually we think the death penalty there is abominable but let s just skip that for now.
While Laurence Tribe argues that hanging chads may be the downfall of California politics he has failed to mention how we could vote by other methods when the county registrars have acknowledged that newer voting machines can t handle a sizable number of candidates.
All the journalists, liberals, and elitists need to stop wringing their hands and should dedicate some time to trying to figure out how to get a little democracy over in their neck of the woods we don t want to see too many east coast elected figures come from political dynasties (Clinton, Gore, Bush) we ve had enough aristocratic government for a lifetime.

Does all this democracy include your gas and water problems? Voted about that lately?
