I’ll admit it — I’m 31 and I don’t know what I want to do when I grow up. Ten years ago, when I felt I had my whole life ahead of me, I thought I’d have figured out by now what I wanted to do and be off on my merry little career path. Whether that path was politics, entertainment, or writing, I figured the whole thing would work itself out.

Well . . . that didn’t happen for me, or some of my friends, apparently. Although we all admire the our contemporaries who had a vision, and a plan, and execution — the rest of us are still bumbling about looking for direction.

Interestingly, in these discussions about what to do one theme arises. “But by the time we finish the requisite education/training/entry level job we’ll be forty trying to start a career.”

Of this I’m of two mindsets. Either I believe what my mother always said to paraphrase, is that you’ll be forty anyway, better to be on the path you want than to be having this discussion then . . . Or I’m of the mindset of damn straight you’re right, we should just keep on plugging until potential employers realize our age is more important than our skills . . .

So what’s the bottom line? Even I don’t know, but as soon as I figure out what I want to be, I’ll let you know.
