I’ve lived in and around a number of cities in the United States. The biggest — New York & Los Angeles — are the regular backdrops for movies and television shows. They’re portrayed as they are glamorous, exciting.
Lately, television has turned to smaller cities, Providence, Rhode Island, in Providence Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in The Guardian, Hartforc, Connecticut, in Gilmore Girls and Judging Amy.
I lived in New England and the Northeast for more than ten years and I fervently wish it looked like it does on television — perpetual autumn, red and gold leaves floating lightly to the ground. The days were never as golden as the Culver City sun makes them appear.
It almost makes me nostalgiac for the home I never had. Who knows, next, dreary and working class Worcester, Massachusetts will be the background for a warm and witty family drama.
