I remember buying my first fax machine at Costco or something like it in 1994. I had just started a newspaper at my law school and people were sending faxes like crazy. It was the way to communicate especially from the outpost of Ithaca, New York.
Well since then I ve always had a fax machine, but frankly, never thought much about it. This week, it broke. Who knows what happened, I went to send a fax on Monday and none of the buttons worked. I unplugged it, and plugged it in again, still no luck.
It turns out, that I use the fax machine all the time. I ve been using WinFax a mighty hassle. So far, I ve received ten faxes and sent three. Who knew how integrated into my life this technology had become.
Just when you think you are unplugged, you realize you re plugged in. Where there was once a luxury now there s a need. Tomorrow, I ll be out shopping for a new fax machine.
