Sometimes new technology is good. My email notification dings and there it is a new telephone message. That’s right, I’m now getting voice mail through my e-mail. This is better than a cell phone. I can get my messages at my desk or on my laptop which I can use wirelessly in dozens of places throughout Los Angeles.
I just signed up for VOIP or Voice Over Internet Phone. Yes, I avoided it at first, because it seems like, just maybe, a fundamental utility like a telephone should be attached to some kind of wires.
The idea of using my DSL or broadband for a telephone reminded me of the early days of the internet when you tried to make those free internet calls, but you couldn’t hear through the static and broken conversations. Apparently, technology has moved forward.
Now, I have a great new phone number, and the ability to use it here, at the new house, and everywhere. Plus I’m getting all those overpriced phone features that run up a monthly bill to fifty dollars per phone number. And I’m leaving behind SBC, which has provided sporadic phone service at best — apparently my neighborhood isn’t in the right demographic for an insfrastructure upgrade.
Next thing you know, I’ll be getting a cell phone . . . . naah.
