When I was in law school, there was one Puerto Rican girl in our class. Fortunately? for her, she was hardly ever called on — the working theory among my black and brown friends was that our all white professors felt uncomfortable pronouncing her first or last name.
Somewhere during our first year, a white student from Kansas pulled her aside and asked her where Ithaca’s Taco Bell’s were. As if she would know — as if being Puerto Rican were akin to being Mexican — as if Taco Bell sold Mexican food.
So here’s my dilemma. I need dried kelp, second dashi, and fresh ramen. My best bet would be a Japanese grocery store. Near downtown Los Angeles, there are plenty of Asian food stores, but are mostly geared toward the Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese populations living in the city.
Little Tokyo is more cultural, and less food oriented. The big markets, I hear, are in Torrance — but I’d like a little guidance before I drive twenty miles on the 405.
The question? Should I ask a woman I’m acquainted with from Japan. Will she be offended if I assume that she knows more about buying Japanese food than I?
Maybe, I’ll just do that second web search.
