While gumming away at my processed food, I started to wonder. I generally make healthy dishes at home — I just eat too much, or add too much butter — because who doesn’t love a good biscuit . . . .
Seriously, the last few days Adam and I have combed our recipe books, and pulled out recipes that would be far healthier than those HMR meals I’m eating.
Today was the first test. For lunch, I had HMR Lasagna. 250 calories, 8 grams of fat, tons of salt, and some unknown (read undesirable) ingredients.
For lunch, I made Adam Zucchini Gratin. Got all the ingredients at the farmers market or from the backyard, with the exception of the Gruyere cheese — because I’ve tried making cheese and it’s hard.
Anyway, after careful nutritional analysis — here’s the score. Adam’s lunch had 300 calories, 15 grams of fat. Now, admittedly, that one-third pound of butter was a bit much, but if you cut the butter in half (which is reasonable with so many tomatoes), then his meal would be better than mine. Why? Because in addition to fresh ingredients, he gets oodles of Vitamins A and C, some calcium, and a bit of iron, and a lot more filling food.
I can’t say the same for my mush.
So, we’re thinking — can we do a better diet than Cedars-Sinai?
