Because every girl should have a soapbox

About Me

The blogger has been controversial since the day she discovered her inner soapbox. She excoriated the cheerleaders on the editorial page of her high school paper, transferred from a co-educational university to a women’s college to protest the gender biased curfew policy, published a newspaper in law school that raked the dean over the coals with (among other things) the headline, “Law School Supports Drug Use”—and that was before she got serious about speaking out. Progressive doesn’t begin to define her political views. She’s a reformed lawyer, and full time novelist who writes under a pseudonym, of course.

  1. I understand the whole bill handcuff situation. I went through that selling electronics (yuk). I am retired now and have a whole new life volunteering for the Sheriff’s Dept., the library and the town museum. Life is good. The only problem is that the time it took to get here was longer than the time I get to enjoy the second life. Oh well, I shouldn’t be so greedy.

  2. Like contriversies? Sweet! Like your Boondock icon.

  3. Hey I loved your article about living without health insurance. We just made the decision yesterday and not only am I comfortable with it, I am downright relieved to be done with it. We had a high deductible (6500) HSA plan and it was costing us 1500 a month for two. Last year I wanted to quit supporting this ridiculous habit of our country, but my husband talked me out of that because, unfortunately, we could still barely afford it. We fish commercially in Alaska, just recently finished our taxes for last year, and as fish prices tumble, along with the rest of the economy, we decided, finally, to quit making these huge out of pocket payments for something that may or may not happen in the future. I feel liberated! My only concession to not having the coverage will be that I put some money aside every month to cover some medical issues that may arise, and if “the big one” occurs I’ll deal with that when the time comes.

I wish everyone would boycott the insurance/hospital/doctor complex going on and force some changes in the system as it appears the Obama adminnistration is unable to enact any changes.

My other complaint is with those who LIKE the status quo regarding America’s health care system. In my experience they are always ones that have coverage themselves, usually through federal or state governments, and isn’t that a type of socialized system itselft?

    Thanks for listening.

  4. I look forward to your column in Front Page Online – even when I disagree, your opinions are always thoughtful, cogent, and sometimes opinion-changing! I especially liked your thoughts on zoos… as a mom of two (past the zoo-age now), I struggled with the same issues. Banned circuses (except the human-only variety) – but zoos are hard to completely avoid. It helps that there are places like the Desert Sanctuary near Palm Desert, and the Wild Animal Park, which seem more humane and preservationist. And if your kid is like mine (especially my oldest), it won’t be long before he’s telling you why he’s against seeing animals perform for humans. My daughter (17 now) gave her friends quite the lecture about a planned “Sea World” trip when they were all of 9 years old.

  5. Hi, read a midwife post you wrote and trying to get a hold of Julie freitas so I can partake in her birthing class. Do you have her contact info?
    Thanks, shauna
